Program in Neuroscience at Cornell University

The Program in Neuroscience integrates the activities of many departments, graduate fields, and colleges to understand the structure and function of the brain and nervous system. This Program is part of a more expansive university-wide effort known as the New Life Sciences Initiative. The NLSI strives to 'enhance and support research and education involving collaboration among biologists, physical scientists, engineers, and computational scientists. Scientists from all of these disciplines bring a wealth of different techniques and viewpoints to bear on the nervous system; collaborations are common, allowing us to combine the best tools to study the brain.

We use this diversity of approaches to answer questions like the following:
(for a more complete list, you can view the people pages or the research/photo gallery)
  • How do neurons function, from the genes and biochemical reactions that shape their electrical activity to their interconnections that form dynamic networks in the brain?
  • How does the brain process our sensory information so that we can see, hear, smell and taste our environment?
  • How do chemical and hormonal interactions in the nervous system shape the operation of neurons and brain systems?
  • How does the brain allow us to coordinate our movements combining visual, tactile, and proprioceptive information seemlessly?

Faculty in Neuroscience at Cornell

Here is a list of faculty interested in neuroscience at Cornell's Ithaca Campus. If you would like to work with one of these faculty as a graduate student, please follow the link for specific instructions to apply and include "Care of the Neuroscience Program" in the address of any application materials.
