The focus of my laboratory is to understand how neurotransmitters and neuropeptides are secreted by neurons and neuroendocrine cells. In particular, we have focused on the role of the SNARE proteins in neurotransmitter release. To study how SNAREs work, we employ the model organism Drosophila melanogaster. Drosophila's extensive genetic and transgenic techniques allow us to perturb the release machinery proteins in vivo and determine how neurotransmitter and neuropeptide release are affected.
